Reading visual field examples and patient results

The examples on this page are intended to accompany discussions about individual patients. A useful interpretation considers the full examination record and the circumstances in which each test was performed.

What does a visual field test assess?

A visual field test checks areas of vision, including peripheral vision. It can form part of an eye examination for Retinitis Pigmentosa. The National Eye Institute’s RP guide explains visual field testing alongside other examinations.

What should I ask about a comparison?

Ask for the dates of the examinations, which eye was tested, whether the test methods were comparable and how the clinician interprets the findings. A selected image may not contain everything needed to understand the result.

What can an individual example tell me?

An example can illustrate what was recorded for one patient. It does not by itself establish how often an outcome occurs, how long it lasts or what another patient should expect. Discuss the evidence supporting any proposed intervention separately from the testimonial.

Where can I ask further questions?

Read about the clinic’s method, watch patient accounts and contact the clinic about an assessment. Ask for an explanation of the measures that would be used in your own case.
